The Staten Island Ferry -- operated by the New York City Department of Transportation -- runs between the southern tip of Manhattan Island and Staten Island. It's free. Hard to believe, but it costs nothing to ride. It's a five mile journey and takes about twenty-five minutes each way.Chances are wherever we are we can find moments of escape that don't cost anything or much. The challenge is to carve out time in schedules already too full to spend an hour or so doing nothing more than feeling the wind in our faces.
