Just Get Rid of the Wheels
On July First it became illegal in the State of California to drive while holding a cell phone. The implication is that if one holds a cell phone while driving then one must be speaking on the cell phone. It is still legal to speak on the cell phone, mind you -- just don't hold it. I'm a little confused about whether or not it's legal to hold the cell phone if you aren't speaking on it. The whole thing is pretty confusing. If you can't hold a cell phone while you drive, why can you continue to hold travel mugs? And why is it not illegal to read maps while we drive? And what about the parent constantly turning to scream at the kids in the back seat? And what about the guy the other day going south on the San Diego Freeway? He was using an electric shaver. Nothing, though, beats the man we saw driving along wearing traditional Jewish prayer garb, rocking back and forth, his prayer book in his left hand, alternatively reading a prayer and looking at the road? Are we going too far to make it illegal to pray while driving? Maybe the simpler approach is to make driving illegal. Then, of course, we lose a whole lot of our dependence on fossil fuels and would have to build, almost immediately good public transportation. Unless, of course, we went totally insane and walked or rode bicycles. But I can't think of this anymore. My cell phone is ringing.
